George Lucas apologises to Disney for saying he sold Star Wars to ‘white slavers’

Star Wars creator George Lucas has apologised after comparing Disney to white slave traders. The director, who sold his space epic franchise to the film giant for $4billion, came under fire for using the phrase during an interview aired on US TV. He said: “I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize.” Lucas, who has made no secret of his dislike of the way Disney has taken the saga in the latest blockbuster installment, The Force Awakens, insisted: “Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise.”

I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks.  Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie

Lucas issued a statement to explain his remarks after the interview with talk show host Charlie Rose was aired. In the interview the film-maker, 71, spoke of the films as his kids, saying: “I sold them to the white slavers that take these things.” He added: “They looked at the stories, and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans’… They decided they were going to do their own thing. They weren’t that keen to have me involved anyway – but if I get in there, I’m just going to cause trouble, because they’re not going to do what I want them to do. And I don’t have the control to do that any more, and all I would do is muck everything up.”

And it really does come down to a simple rule of life, which is: when you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule – you don’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they’re doing… you just say no, gone, history, I’m moving forward. Every time you do something like that, you’re just opening the wound again
