Glass walkway 1,000 metres above ground cracks under feet of tourists

Tourists screamed in terror as a glass walkway suspended 1,079 metres (3,540 feet) in the air cracked beneath their feet. The walkway, at Yuntai Mountain Geological Park in Henan Province, China, was damaged at around 5pm local time on Monday afternoon - causing a whole lot of understandable panic among visitors. Posting on Chinese social media site Weibo, tourist Lee Dong Hai said that he heard a sound, then looked down to see the shattered glass.

A lot of people started to scream. I screamed out, ‘It cracked! It really cracked!’ and then I pushed the people in front of me so that we could run out of the way.

Speaking to People’s Daily Online, a spokesperson for the Yuntai Mountain tourism bureau explained that the cracks happened after a tourist dropped a stainless steel mug. Thankfully, it was only one of three layers of glass that broke, so the tourists were not in too much danger, the spokesperson said. The walkway, which opened in September, has understandably been closed until further notice.
