‘God’ proves his existence in court battle with credit rating agency

A Russian-born man whose first name is God has settled a lawsuit with a credit reporting agency that had refused to recognise his name as legitimate. Under the agreement reached in Brooklyn federal court this week, Equifax will enter God Gazarov’s name into its database. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Gazarov now has a robust 820 credit score. He says he was shocked by Equifax’s refusal to acknowledge his moniker. The Russian native is a Brooklyn jewellery store owner who is named after his grandfather.

I’m happy my credit is fixed and I just hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Gazarov, who owns a jewellery business called “Gold Hard Cash”, was denied a loan for an Infiniti car in 2013 because the lender could not obtain a financial report on him from Equifax, according to the suit. He opted to buy a Honda and was charged a higher rate of interest because his credit score was “9002”, which essentially means he had no credit history. Gazarov’s lawyer, James B. Fishman, said his client’s credit rating was corrected by Equifax shortly after the lawsuit was filed last year.
