Owl’s about that? Tokyo cafe provides bird of prey with your hot drink

A cafe in Japan is offering customers an hour with an owl. Tokyo’s Fukuro no Mise (Shop of Owls) charges around £11 to queue for an hour to get in then enjoy a drink/snack in the company of a bird of prey. Cafes offering domestic pets as a sideshow are nothing new but this highly original concept has really taken off. The owls come in various sizes and species, from tiny to quite large, including a great horned owl with large sharp claws and impressive beak.

They can’t be potty trained like dogs. So please be generous when they potty on you!

One of the instructions at Tokyo’s Fukuro no Mise

Each bird has a tether around one foot, which you hold in your hand as they perch on your arm. The attentive staff will even place the owl on your shoulder or head. There’s no food but a small drink is included, covered in plastic wrap, decorated with a magic marker illustration of an owl. The hours ends with souvenirs held up by staff which customers raise their free hand for. Extra popular souvenirs - such as photo books, cell phone charms, chopsticks and a cloth decorated with owls - are decided by rock-paper-scissors.
