Police: 1 dead in shooting at Copenhagen free speech event

On Saturday, one man was confirmed dead by police after a shooting in Copenhagen outside a building where a debate on Islam and freedom of speech was taking place. Three police officers were wounded attempting to protect those inside the venue, police added in a statement. French ambassador Francois Zimeray, who was at the debate, told AFP the attack had “the same intention as Charlie Hebdo”, referring to the killings at the satirical newspaper in Paris last month. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned what he called a “terrorist attack” in a separate statement.

Still alive in the room.

The cafe was hosting a freedom of speech event organised by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has faced numerous threats for caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad in 2007. Some 30 bullet holes ripped through the window of the Krudttoenden cafe, the TV2 channel said Saturday. Niels Ivar Larsen, one of the speakers at the event, told TV2 that at least two people were wounded. Danish police told Berlingske, a Danish newspaper, that the suspects, who were clad in black and spoke Danish, had allegedly targeted Vilks.
