Robot vacuum cleaner ‘attacks’ Korean woman while she sleeps

A Korean woman was freed by emergency services after a robot vacuum cleaner took aim at her head while she slept. The unnamed woman awoke to find that the machine had sucked up 2 inches of her hair — and couldn’t free herself. The 52-year-old had to call the fire department with a “desperate rescue plea.” It took the efforts of two paramedics to free her from the cleaning device, which is believed to have been set on an automated patrol of the house in the early hours of the morning.

This case was quite special. We had seen weird things, but this was a very weird call that we received.

Robot vacuums first went on sale more than a decade ago, and are armed with sensors that usually instruct them to avoid obstacles. The Jan. 3 “attack” is one of the first cases of its kind. The makers of Roomba, iRobot, have distanced themselves from the story, saying the South Korean woman was not using one of their products.
