Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Mary Poppins takes flight again in new Disney film

After more than 50 years, Disney is bringing a “spoon full of sugar” back with a live action remake of Mary Poppins. The 1964 film starring Dame Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyck is a much-loved classic, known for its catchy songs and tap-dancing routines. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the new tale will be set about 20 years after the original and will be based on the books by Poppins creator PL Travers. The film will again be a musical, although a reboot of songs like Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is not guaranteed. Sources confirmed to Variety that Rob Marshall (“Chicago”, “Annie”) is set to direct.

The new project (which is decidedly not being developed as a sequel) will explore Mary’s further adventures with the Banks family and beyond as illustrated by Travers’ seven additional novels.

Insiders confirm the new film will take place in London 20 years after the first film and will take storylines from the P.L. Travers’ children books focusing on the magical nanny’s continued adventures with the Banks family. The original film starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the story of a nanny who came to work for a banker’s unhappy family in pre-World War I England.
