Yemen hit by deadly car bomb and air strikes as UN sounds warning

A car bomb exploded Saturday near a mosque in the Old City of the rebel-held Yemeni capital Sanaa, causing an unknown number of casualties, witnesses and security sources said. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appealed to warring sides to observe a truce for at least two weeks to mark the start of Ramadan, but UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva ended on Friday without agreement.

Millions of families no longer have access to clean water, proper sanitation or basic healthcare.

The UN relief arm called for $1.6bn in funding on Friday in order to rescue Yemen from a crisis that has led to acute food insecurity. On the political front, delegates of Yemen’s exiled government have now returned to Saudi Arabia after peace  talks with a Houthi-led delegation in Geneva collapsed.
