'Accidental' invasion: Ukraine captures Russian troops who crossed border

Ukraine has captured 10 Russian soldiers near the Russian-Ukrainian border, military officials are saying. However, according to Russian military sources, the troops had crossed the border accidentally. Ukrainian officials, who posted the news on their Facebook page, did not give details of how the capture took place. It posted videos of five men it said were among the captives, one of whom said the soldiers had been told they were being mobilized to take part in military exercises. The news of the capture comes as Ukrainian and Russian leaders are meeting in Minsk to find a solution to the conflict.

The soldiers were really taking part in patrolling a section of the Russian-Ukrainian border, they crossed it most likely by accident, on an unequipped, unmarked section.

Russia reportedly has tens of thousands of troops positioned in areas near the Ukrainian border, leading to persistent concerns that Russia could be preparing an invasion. On Monday, Ukraine said 10 tanks and two armoured vehicles belonging to the Russian military crossed into southeastern Ukraine bearing the flags of the rebel Donetsk People’s Republic. Russia is denying that it’s supporting or directing the pro-Russian rebels.
