Fugitive drug lord ‘El Chapo’ injured as he evaded capture in Mexico

Notorious fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman suffered injuries to his leg and face as he narrowly escaped capture by security forces, according to the Mexican authorities. The head of the Sinaloa drug cartel was hurt as he fled from pursuers in the north-west of the country. Guzman, whose nickname means “Shorty”, left the authorities red-faced after he broke out of his prison cell in a maximum security jail in July through a mile long tunnel. Efforts to recapture him have been continuing ever since.

The security cabinet continues to conduct all actions that will allow the recapture of this criminal.

The Mexican government said it had worked with international agencies in its efforts to apprehend Guzman. It said in a statement: “As a result of these actions, and to avoid his capture, in recent days, the fugitive engaged in a hasty retreat, which, according to the information received, caused him injuries to one leg and the face. It’s important to clarify that these injuries were not a product of a direct clash." US network NBC News reported on Friday that Mexican marines closed in on the Sinaloa cartel kingpin last week after US drug agents intercepted cell phone signals indicating El Chapo was hiding in a ranch in the Sierra Madre mountains near the Sinaloa city of Cosala.
