‘Get rid of junk day’: Amazon under fire for Prime Day 'car boot sale’

It was hyped as a sale that would put Black Friday bargains in the shade. But Amazon’s 'Prime Day’ sale - exclusively for subscribers of its priority delivery service - has been labelled a “virtual garage sale”. In advance of the sale, users got fired up for cut-price electronics - but many took to Twitter after being left disappointed by Wednesday’s discounts. Katie Olrich wrote: “So far #PrimeDay seems like 'get rid of junk nobody wants’ day.” Yet, Amazon said the sale had surpassed last year’s Black Friday event - in peak order rates, at least.

When I die, I want whoever was responsible for #PrimeDay to lower me down into my grave so I can be let down one more time.

Some of the sale’s lowlights included a half-price 55-gallon barrel of lubricant, disinfectant wipes reduced by 20%, and a job lot of discounted chef hats. A Reddit user called Beardfish wrote: “I was looking for an excuse to buy something, yet at the end of the day I’m buying nothing." Someone responded: "I spent 30 minutes looking through all the current and future deals, looking, begging for an excuse to buy something. I was lukewarm on maybe 1 or 2 things. That’s even a stretch." Other less-than-exciting deals included a reduced 24-inch shoehorn, 15% off a family pack of Pop-Tarts, and a bargain pair of Crocs flip-flops.

#PrimeDay is so trash, man.
