How the Internet has responded with glee to #WorldEmojiDay

It has been hailed as the fastest-growing language in the world — and now the all-conquering emoji has its own day. Today is #WorldEmojiDay because July 17 is displayed on the iOS Calendar emoji. And while there’s a very good chance that when they woke up this morning many didn’t know it was World Emoji Day, the Internet has reacted with its customary eager ingenuity to fully embrace this most modern of celebrations. From songs to film titles to ballet synopses, anything that could be recast as an emoji appears to have been. Quizzes have been constructed asking you to guess the films, footballers, cities and railway stations. Even companies have got in the act, with billboard ads using nothing but emoji icons. World Emoji Day also provides a good opportunity for those quizzes that have done the rounds on the Internet in the past to get yet another airing.
