It’s over between us! Tinder tweetstorm after hurtful Vanity Fair story

Tinder has reacted furiously after Vanity Fair published a scathing 6,000-word article saying it was responsible for a “dating apocalypse”. The article featured a series of personal accounts from Tinder users, painting a dim picture of a generation hooked on casual sex and endless swiping. It was a hit on social media, being rapidly shared on Facebook and Twitter - but Tinder was quick to hit back. The strength of its response surprised many - 30 tweets were fired off in a matter of minutes, rebutting points made in the article and criticising the publication for not approaching the company for comment.

It’s disappointing that Vanity Fair thought that the tiny number of people you found for your article represent our entire global userbase. Next time reach out to us first… that’s what journalists typically do.

Tinder hits back on Twitter

In the Tweetstorm, Tinder said: “The Tinder Generation is real. Our users are creating it. But it’s not at all what you portray it to be. Tinder creates experiences. We create connections that otherwise never would have been made.” Vanity Fair claimed as many as 30% of Tinder users were married and were looking for quick sex. Tinder said the app has been used to find friendships, create relationships, and has event led to a “sh*t ton of marriages”. It added that many users are in China and North Korea to meet people because Facebook is banned.

Our intention was to highlight the many statistics and amazing stories that are sometimes left unpublished, and, in doing so, we overreacted.
