Miley Cyrus in hot water in Mexico over Independence Day flag spank stunt

Miley Cyrus is facing a fine or detention in Mexico after one of her dancers spanked her backside with the national flag during an Independence Day performance. The 21-year-old was performing in Monterrey in the northern state of Nuevo Leon when her twerking came to the attention of local lawmakers. The state legislature has approved a warrant for the Interior Ministry to enforce the law on the star’s use of the flag.

They are hitting her with the flag, or cleaning her backside. It’s a lack of respect. The interior ministry must sanction the singer Miley Cyrus for desecrating the flag.

Cyrus or her team could be fined up to the equivalent of around $1,200 (£736) or be detained for 36 hours. The singer regularly grabs headlines for her admitted drug use, sexually suggestive dancing and wearing very little in her music videos. Mexican authorities are often sensitive toward signs of disrespect for national symbols. In 2008, singer Paulina Rubio was fined for posing without clothes but wrapped in the country’s flag. Cyrus is currently on her worldwide Bangerz tour.
