One World Trade Center base jumpers face a year behind bars

Three men who staged a base jump from the top of One World Trade Center have been convicted of criminal charges over the stunt and face a year in jail. James Brady, 33, Andrew Rossig, 34, and 28-year-old Marko Markovich, all from New York, were caught on camera leaping from the top of the 104-storey building. The footage, recorded on CCTV and helmet cameras, showed at least two figures in black suits and helmets landing on the streets of lower Manhattan.

This verdict shows that the District Attorney’s Office has wasted a significant amount of time and a significant amount of taxpayers’ dollars to turn a misdemeanour case into a felony.

Prosecutors said the men climbed through a gap in the construction fence at the skyscraper. One World Trade Center opened to its first tenants in November 2014, but was still under construction when the men carried out their jump. All three were found guilty by a jury in state Supreme Court of misdemeanour charges of reckless endangerment in the second degree, reckless endangerment of property and unauthorised climbing, jumping and suspending oneself from a structure after the stunt on 30 September, 2013.
