A great white shark thought to be up to 7m long has been spotted off the coast of southern Australia, forcing the evacuation of a beach. The monster was spotted by the crew of a patrolling helicopter about 100m off Marino Rocks in Adelaide’s south on Sunday afternoon. The helicopter’s crew members said it was about 7m long, making it potentially as big as the fictional shark in the Jaws films. "It’s the biggest I’ve ever seen as a crew member in the Westpac chopper,“ said one of those in the helicopter.
We put it down as 7m the photo really doesn’t do it justice

The sighting led to a nearby junior Surf Life Saving event being cancelled and swimmers were told to leave the beach. "Helicopter aerial patrols are currently herding a large white shark out to sea off Marino Rocks,” said Shark Alerts South Australia, a non-profit organisation which monitors shark movements. The group said a jetboat was used to compare the size and the shark was bigger. The pictures caused a stir on social media, with some swearing never to step foot in the ocean again and others arguing the great white was unlikely to be that large and labelling the sighting a “fisherman’s tale”.
Honestly, a 5m shark is an absolute giant and it looks twice as big – you can only imagine what a 6m shark does to people’s perceptions.
